Hunting for Flying Fox | Yolngu comedy!
This is a hunting expedition with Peter Walarri (in red shorts) and family in 1996. Walarri is Ramingining's primary yidaki player along with David Dharrapuy.
What started out as a serious hunting trip quickly turned into a comedy show, with families deliberately acting up in front of the camera. To appreciate the humour you need to have an understanding of Yolngu Matha language. But I guess the visuals and the body language give you an idea of the hilary in which we found ourselves!
We ended up with roasted flying foxes (warrnyu) and cabbage palm (da:rra), the flying fox having quite a strong gamey taste. Not my favourite, but if you're hungry, you'll eat anything.
Famous artist Dorothy Djukulul can be seen in the background in some of the shots. The big tall bloke is David Biltji, the eldest son of Jardie Ashley... another renowned artist.
